Both of those are worth saying out loud rather than papering over.

In short

Both of those are worth saying out loud rather than papering over. A page that claims certainty about a 17 Mukhi’s tradition, or offers several of them in stock, is claiming more than the subject supports.

What decides the price at these counts

  1. Whether it is genuinely the count it is sold as. This outweighs everything else.
  2. Where it grew. Nepali costs more than Indonesian, size for size.
  3. Size. Gentle to about 20 mm, steep after that.
  4. Condition of the grooves — unbroken, unrepaired, not filled.
  5. Whether a laboratory report comes with it, and from which laboratory.

Questions people ask

How do I tell a genuine 15 Mukhi from a carved one?
By X-ray or CT scan. Fifteen clefts outside should mean fifteen chambers inside, and carving cannot change the chambers. Ask for the scan image, not only the certificate, and check the report number on the laboratory's own website rather than the seller's.
Why are 15, 16, 17 and 18 Mukhi prices so different from each other?
Scarcity, almost entirely. Each face further from five roughly halves how many beads a harvest yields, and price follows that curve rather than any difference in the bead itself. Scarcity is not quality: a rarer count is not a better bead.
Which planet is the 15 Mukhi associated with?
In Vedic tradition, sources differ, and with Pashupati, a form of Shiva. Sources differ above fourteen faces, so this is the most widely followed reading rather than the only one. It is a record of what a tradition holds, not a claim about what the bead does.
Which planet is the 16 Mukhi associated with?
In Vedic tradition, sources differ, and with Ram, and Mahakal. Sources differ above fourteen faces, so this is the most widely followed reading rather than the only one. It is a record of what a tradition holds, not a claim about what the bead does.
Which planet is the 17 Mukhi associated with?
In Vedic tradition, sources differ, and with Katyayani, a form of Devi. Sources differ above fourteen faces, so this is the most widely followed reading rather than the only one. It is a record of what a tradition holds, not a claim about what the bead does.
Which planet is the 18 Mukhi associated with?
In Vedic tradition, sources differ, and with Bhumi Devi, the earth. Sources differ above fourteen faces, so this is the most widely followed reading rather than the only one. It is a record of what a tradition holds, not a claim about what the bead does.
Does a genuine Rudraksha sink in water?
Not reliably. Density varies with species, age and how dry the bead is, and genuine beads float while imitations sink often enough that the result tells you nothing you can act on.
Is a certificate worth paying extra for?
At these counts, yes. The report is most of what you are buying, and a bead without one should be priced as though it were a 5 Mukhi.
What is the difference between Nepali and Java beads?
Nepali beads are larger with deeper grooves; Indonesian beads are smaller and finer and are what most 108-bead malas are made from. Neither is lesser, and the price difference size for size is substantial.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Better not to. It is a seed rather than a stone, and soap dries it out. Take it off first and dry it gently if it does get wet.

Traditional and astrological associations described on this page are matters of belief, not established fact. Nothing here is medical advice. Rudraksha beads are not a treatment for any condition.
